The Patterson Lake Association
483 Porcupine Way.
June 5, 2005
Present: Lorne Bowerman, Dave MacCrimmon, Howard Stanley, Rhodena Bell, Kathleen
Sullivan, Bill Brooks
Regrets: Nil
In Attendance: Mike Stanley
- Lorne opened the meeting at 2:00 PM and welcomed Kathleen Sullivan, the new representative from Parsons Way/Lane. Dave moved seconded by Bill that the agenda be accepted. Carried. Howard moved seconded by Bill that the minutes of the last meeting be
accepted. Carried. Some errors to names and addresses need correcting.(Below). - Lake Level
Dave reported that the beavers had been very active and quite a bit of work has been done to keep the culverts clear. Thanks were expressed to Tom Hill and Lionel Pauzé for their hard work. The lake level is about 15″. Dave passed around the official forms from MNR to request a control device for the lake. Dave will start the process of filling or getting the forms filled out. Lorne discussed a device called a “beaver baffler” which had been used successfully in many areas, including Gatineau Park. The beaver baffler is a pipe laid on the bottom through the dam. Dave will check out the possibility of its use. - Meanwhile the meeting unanimously agreed to set up a roster for clearing of the culverts during the summer down to the agreed level of 8″-10″. Like the cleaning in the fall, each lake road association will take a two week shift. At the conclusion of a shift, the next road association will be contacted to give the current state of the culverts. Anyone wishing to help should contact their respective representatives. The shifts and road associations are:
- 11 June to 24 June – Kathleen (Parsons Way/Lane)
- 25 June to 8 July – Bill (Porcupine Way)
- 9 July to 22 July – Dave (Hardwood Ridge Rd)
- 23 July to 5 August – Lorne (White Pine Lane/Lakeside Rd)
- 6 August – 19 August – Howard (Fairs Lane/Way)
- Marker Buoys
Lorne reported that the main marker buoys had been refurbished and put out marking the shoal rocks off Mary’s Island. Other markers have been put out by Dave and Doug Love. The meeting agreed again that there were many dangerous rocks in the lake and the ones marked were considered the major hazards. Boaters have to watch to avoid rocks. - History
Rhodena reported that the first part of the history has been written. Lorne suggested that it could be put up on the web as the cheapest means of publishing. Rhodena also mentioned the Larry McDermott had completed his thesis on Early Patterson Lake History and a copy will be requested to put up on our site. A McDonalds Corners & Area Historical Society has been established and Rhodena is serving as Secretary. We all look forward to reading the interesting stories of our lake and area. - Association Structure
A good round table discussion was held on the nature and function of our organization. As a coordinating association with no income, the meeting felt that there was no need for an annual meeting. Each representative would report on our activities to their respective road association meetings. Lorne pointed out that the main advantage of our lake association is that we are in existence so we can react to any situation quickly. We can also represent lake interests to the wider community and political levels. Lorne will re-write the draft constitution to reflect these thoughts. - Other Business
Kathleen will contact our local councillor, Leonard Echlin, to make sure he knows that we are interested in any discussions that affect Patterson Lake or it adjacent properties. - Lorne will ask our Lake Steward, Terry Wilkie, if he has any information on control of lake weeds.
- Next Meetings
The next meetings are August 14 at Howard’s (632 Fairs Lane) and October 16 at Lorne’s (151 Lakeside Rd). - Adjournment and Post Adjournment
Bill moved seconded by Howard that the meeting adjourn at 3:30. Carried. The meeting agreed to meet again in one-half hour at the culverts to do some hands on work. (The members cleaned the culverts and re-piled sticks. A rake and straw fork are the most useful tools; it also helps to have Howard and his son Mike wade into the water and pull out branches. It was hot work with the temperature about 30°.)
